I think if you listen carefully, your life is enhanced. It’s the same as looking carefully.
— R. MURRAY SCHAFER

Third Angle New Music invites you to an ear-cleansing soundwalk, a roving exhibition of sound through Portland led by local composers Darrell Grant, Branic Howard, Crystal Quartez, Julie Hammond, Yuan-Chen Li, Amenta Abioto, Loren Chasse, Sarah Tiedemann, and Andy Akiho. Soundwalks started in the 1970s as a way of focusing on sounds of the urban landscape and the effect they have on us, a sort of aural activism led by Canadian composer, R. Murray Schafer. For other artists of the era, it became a way to incorporate environmental sound in their work, while also breaking with the traditional concert hall experience.

Dilate your senses and listen to the soundscape that surrounds us all while your downloaded guide brings you to the familiar and unexpected. All you need to do is plug in your headphones, open your ears, and stroll.

The parks can sometimes be a heavily trafficked public spaces. For your safety, please be aware of your surroundings during the walks.
